letters in response to emails
22 november 02

dear sa,

you probably didn't realize how much that letter of yours would crack me up, not what you wrote but the fact that it was in response to the email i had sent to you.

i had this job for a while earlier this fall where most of the work involved finding reviewers for manuscripts. this one guy had submitted one without any suggestions, and everyone at work was getting so hands-off about things by that point (there's a story in itself) that i had to send him several emails requesting a list of people to contact. this guy would not respond to the emails via email. instead i'd get a handwritten letter from him about a week later, even if i specified "please send me an email..." it was just so absurd — i couldn't help but love this guy for his half-refusal of technology.

also, he always called me "Dr", though oddly enough a lot of people did. the weird assumption that an editorial assistant could be assumed to have a ph.d was also a steady source of humor; as well as the common "Dear Sir" letters and the few phone calls i had to take where i pretended to know anything about genetic research.

but those letters were definitely my favorite distraction there. he has such great, nearly illegible handwriting to boot.
